SODRAC was founded in 1985 on the initiative of songwriters and composers in order to manage the reproduction rights of authors, composers and publishers of musical works. In September 1997, a new department was created specifically to manage the rights of creators of artistic works.

The Visual Arts and Crafts Department's national (Canadian) repertoire lists an increasing number of artists from both the visual arts and crafts fields. Indeed, SODRAC has been mandated by Quebec's Craft Council, the Conseil des métiers d'art du Québec in order to manage the rights of creators of works of artistic craftsmanship.

At the international level, an important number of representation agreements have been concluded with many foreign collectives, among which: ADAGP (France), ARS (United-States), Bild-Kunst (Germany), BURIDA (Ivory Coast), COPY-DAN (Denmark), LATGA (Lithuania), RAO (Russia), SABAM (Belgium), SACK (North Korea), SIAE (Italy), SOMAAP (Mexico), VI$COPY (Australia and New-Zealand) as well as with PICASSO administration and the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation.

In order to ensure the representation of this new category of members in its administration, SODRAC has formed a special committee composed of artists and right owners in the visual arts and crafts fields. Mandates of this committee include the establishment of management policies and intervention strategies concerning the Visual Arts and Crafts repertoire.

SODRAC, by its active involvement in the many stages of the revision of the Canadian Copyright Law, guards the interests of the artists and right owners it represents and is working to increase the protection that is granted to them by the introduction, among other things, of the "droit de suite", as well as the extension of the duration of copyright protection up to 70 years after the death of the author.

SODRAC is member of CISAC, CIAGP (International Council of Authors of the Graphic and Plastic Arts and of Photographers) and of the Canadian branch of ALAI (International Literary and Artistic Association).
