It is often difficult for a single artist to control the uses that are made of his works and to ensure by himself the respect and management of his rights. It is also sometimes quite difficult for someone who wishes to reproduce artistic works to trace the artists or their heirs in order to obtain the necessary authorizations.

Copyright collectives make the task easier in both cases by acting as an intermediary between users and a collective of artists and right owners. Their mandate consists of granting copyright licensing on behalf of the artists and/or right owners, collecting royalties for the rights granted and redistributing them to their members. As a general rule, these societies are non-profit organizations and they are directed by their members.

Such collectives exist throughout the world, for all types of artistic creations (music, literature, drama, visual arts). Most of them are members of the International Confederation of Authors' and Composers' Societies (CISAC) a non-governmental organization which establishes international management standards and contributes to the advancement of copyright legislation throughout the world.

In order to enable the artists and right owners to be represented internationally in the largest number of countries possible, reciprocal agreements are concluded between copyright collectives throughout the world. By these agreements, the concerned societies become the exclusive representatives of the foreign society's repertoire on their respective territories. This enables users to obtain licensing directly in their country of origin for the use of works created by both national and foreign artists.
