Sodrac was founded in 1985 by SPACQ (Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec), SACEM (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (France) and PROCAN (Performing Rights Organization of Canada Ltd.). It is an authors' society and the only reproduction rights society of its kind in North America.

It is an "authors' society" because its members are the authors, composers and publishers: membership in SODRAC and remuneration by SODRAC are direct, without intermediaries.

Before April 1st 2004, SPACQ and SACEM were the society's only shareholders, now it belong to its members. The SODRAC Board of Directors consists of eleven members, six are authors, composers or both and five publishers.

Grownth of SODRAC activities has been constant. There are now some 4,200 Canadian members, and the repertoires of 83 territories or countries are represented. Nearly 95% of authors, composers and publishers in Quebec have entrusted SODRAC with the management of their reproduction rights.

SODRAC is a member of CISAC (Confédération des sociétés d'auteurs et de compositeurs) and BIEM (Bureau international des sociétés gérant les droits d'enregistrement et de reproduction mécanique).
